I have to admit, in the past, I took for granted what I teach and already know and started to question myself. As a business life coach I would think,
“Things just seem to be getting in my way. What is wrong with me?” Then I learned some valuable keys to unlock the secrets of ownership.
Understanding these keys is critical because assumptions, beliefs, and attitudes we hold determine the actions we take. When things go wrong it is easy find excuses and to blame. Our brain then finds “evidence” to reinforce this thinking. Brain Research has discovered that we think in excess of 65,000 thoughts a day and 95% of the same thoughts as yesterday! This repetitive pattern keeps us stuck in our ways and prevents us from having the relationships we want, taking care or ourselves, settling for mediocre business and life, and sometimes even throwing in the towel.
Read below as I share with you three of the critical keys you must use to unlock to take responsibility in your life so that you can approach any circumstance with personal freedom of choice.
KEY #1. Awareness
Understand yourself and develop self awareness. Let’s look at what happens when you are locked into focusing on a problem, challenge, or adversity. All you see before you is fear and doubt. There is a sense of desperation, tenseness, anxiety. You can feel it in your body with your stomach knotting up, your neck tightening, your head starting to spin, your heart racing faster. Your attention goes to what you have done before. You cannot maintain focus on what is before you so you shift your responsibility to old patterns and excuses.
Stop right here. Shift your attention to identify what feelings and thoughts are coming up for you.
Take a minute to acknowledge and identify these.
Don’t judge the thoughts, just notice what they are.
KEY #2. Beliefs
The next key is to examine the underlying beliefs that support your feelings and thinking.
On the inside it may feel like there is busy conversation going about how you screwed up so big time and it’s all your fault. This is the language of a victim. Or there may be the language of the blamer…they should have, they didn’t, its not right.
Instead, identify what you believe about the situation. Many times these beliefs are perceptions and opinions of what had been true in the past. Ask yourself, is this really true or an old pattern?
KEY # 3. CHOICE CROSSROADS
You now have the awareness. You know the beliefs you have. Now it is time to ask yourself a personal question.
What will I choose to do about this?
You are at the crossroads. The choice is simple. Ignore your new awareness and stay stuck. Act on your new awareness and take ownership in a making a different choice in how your respond.
When we think about change and taking responsibility for ourselves, we can get scared. This fear is just the minds alert signal saying that there is something new and different coming up that is not familiar with yet. You are stretching into so much more of what is possible for you and you are capable of so much more than you give yourself credit for.
It takes practice to make different choices and come clean with the excuses we have been living by. Now that you have 3 Keys to unlock the ownership door, it is time to put into practice . It’s as easy as A< B< C. Awareness, Beliefs, and Choice.
Your choice more than chance determines your ownership. If that is you, let’s talk. You can contact me at YourBrilliantYou.com or firstname.lastname@example.org
